What is the biggest impact wireless and mobile media have to society?

Wireless and mobile media have had a huge impact on society. According to the article, “Without doubt, mobile telephony offers enormous advantages and added convenience, greater personal security, and the ability to take advantage of ‘dead’ time to do business on the move.” One example is Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi used to be only used in homes with the help of a router or such. Now most public places offer free Wi-Fi. They do this because places like restaurants, cafes, etc want to be serviceable to its customers and by doing this they will attract more customers. Anyone who has internet access can video chat their friends, chat online, watch movies and TV on Netflix, prime video, Hulu, etc. Wi-Fi also helps with download speeds. Download speeds tend to be very low when using just a data plan, but with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi 5G, download speeds can go up to 100 mb/s. Society should be pretty happy with the many advantages Wi-Fi has brought them.

Because technology is constantly growing, we, as consumers and people, are easily influenced by technology and the digital era. One of the greatest inventions of all time is the mobile phone. People can conduct ordinary tasks with mobile phones since they are tiny enough to fit in their hands. a device that you can carry around with you. A smartphone’s convenience is unparalleled, which is why it is considered one of the best technologies. Because they are there to entertain, assist, and give ease for your everyday life, mobile media has the same effect as a smartphone. In the article “Social Impacts The Telephone And The Cell Phone Has Had On Society” states “Mobile telephony is without doubt one of the most explosive developments ever to have taken place in the telecommunications industry.” I believe that the most significant impact that wireless and mobile media have on society is simply the ease with which it can be assimilated into someone’s life without causing any disruptions, if anything, it may actually help them.

The internet hasn’t only been groundbreaking for the last 20 years but it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop being innovative. For example, the usage of wifi. Before, wifi could only be accessed in people’s homes and businesses but that isn’t the case anymore. Now wifi is everywhere, from the local park to NYC Buses and subway trains. Jonah Brucker-Cohen, author of WiFi-Hog: From Reaction to Realizationstates, If I remember the way NYC Wireless, etc started out, the very act of putting up public wireless nodes was to exert territoriality – we were claiming the public parks as free Wi-Fi zones, and betting that these would deter pay providers from locating there. To a large degree this has turned out to be an accurate prediction. We were also trying to re-contextualize networks within local places, grounding them in real urban communities rather than having them exist in some kind of an abstract non-geographic cyberspace”. Not only has the internet made it’s mark on this generation but generations to come. Case in point, the use of emojis and how they are used as some communication symbols. 30-40 years ago that would’ve been unimaginable because the telephone was the big thing and mobile phones weren’t even an idea yet. To see how far we’ve come by having mini computers in our pockets in terms of a smartphone’s  capabilities. People of the previous generation would look at an iPhone or the Samsung phone as complicated but having to revert back to pressing the big numbers on the phone to dial somebody would be challenging to those of today.

The impact of wireless connectivity and mobile media has been remarkable to our world but has also opened doors for many good things. For instance, those with access to an internet connection could instantly chat or email their family, friends across the globe. International bonds were far more accessible, online dating was made possible, and people are able to create personal websites that reflect their interests and connect with other people alike. Moreover, wireless technology can provide many benefits to computing, including faster response to queries, reduced time spent on paperwork, increased online time for users, real-time control. The article “Social Impacts The Telephone And The Cell Phone Has Had On Society” by Victor Epand provided great points on the environmental perspective. Victor states, environmental complaints have been the loudest in developed countries, where zoning laws, property rights, and environmental obligations are often more strictly enforced. This was a interesting theme as access to technology may be something that helps a community but is being criticized. With that being said, communities in developing countries are often so grateful for a modern communications infrastructure that they are happy enough to turn a blind eye to environmental aesthetics. Furthermore, the article WiFi-Hog: From Reaction to Realization by Jonah Brucker-Cohen provided good insight into some adverse effects of Wifi usage. For example, the idea of spectrum overcrowding is a real issue and can cause division and “conflict between for-pay and free nodes.” Technology is ever-changing is an emerging market that is still relatively new. For that purpose, it was a refreshing read to learn about “Projects like WiFi-Hog are clear and critical reminders that wireless networking is still a young technology that displaces architectural and social boundaries. This distinction is important for the future of wireless and the communities that support its development.”

Mobile and Wireless Space

Since its very conception, technology has been constantly evolving and will continue to do so throughout the entirety of our life and beyond. Some of the biggest things which have developed as a result of technology and the internet are wireless and mobile media. Similarly to the internet, wireless and mobile media have had the biggest impact and contribution to society through the role it has played in connecting people throughout the world. In the article “Social Impacts The Telephone And The Cell Phone Has Had On Society” by Victor Epand, we see the almost magical growth of telecommunications from the early to late 90s. “By the end of 1990 there were just 11 million cellular subscribers world-wide; eight years later that figure had jumped to 320 million”. Convenience has been increased to the max through the usage of wireless and mobile media although according to Epand it is “having a profound effect on our interpersonal interaction”. Wireless and mobile media has also led to somewhat of a legal gray area when it comes to acceptable usage policies between the users of these public wireless networks as seen in the article “WiFi-Hog: From Reaction to Realization” by Jonah Brucker-Cohen. Apart from the legal implications, we also see that the issue between private and public wireless nodes has an effect that “displaces architectural and social boundaries” as stated by Brucker-Cohen. Despite all of these things, the benefits brought about by these means have altered history for the best in my opinion. The global convergence and unification of people from all over the globe is something which is normal nowadays but I’m still left in awe of everything as to me it’s truly something amazing.

Over the years, technology, the internet, and all of the components that make up both of these advancements have continued to rapidly and indescribably alter. Those alterations and modifications have changed not just devices and productivity, but the consumers who use them as well. More specifically, they have changed how individuals and communities communicate, receive entertainment, and even work and make a living. Jonah Brucker-Cohen, author of WiFi-Hog: From Reaction to Realization states, “I heard about people using the technology in classrooms and hospitals, with very particular applications that seemed too particular for any mainstream adoption. A few years later, wireless internet (now affectionately called “Wi-Fi”) began to resurface as reports of projects and public community networks began to sprout up.” The internet, particularly wireless internet, has made accessing the internet and all of its websites, apps, and knowledge much more simpler. People of all ages, all over the world are able to retrieve anything online with a few clicks and a good Wi-Fi connection. What was once complex and tiresome is now straightforward and simplistic. Society has been enabled to transform and excel not only technologically, but socially, educationally, and financially. Games, apps, websites, and streaming services, have all been linked to wireless and mobile media advancements allowing the previous ways of watching and using them to shift for the better. Activities and interests that were once only able to be done at home are now mobile and portable. Victor Epand, author of Social Impacts The Telephone And The Cell Phone Has Had On Society says, “Mobile telephony is without doubt one of the most explosive developments ever to have taken place in the telecommunications industry.” The telephone that was once only built into homes is now in our pockets, bags, or hands as we are outdoors and even traveling out of the country. We can now use that form of communication on the move and anywhere in the world that has service. All of these developments have massively impacted our everyday lives. Whether that be our use of the internet, technology, or Wi-Fi, their participation in change has shifted our approach and outlooks on the media, technology, and life overall.

NFTs -Jacqueline Minelli

NFTs have been around for a long time, despite their recent media exposure. NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, have been all over the news recently. An NFT is a blockchain-based digital asset, commonly artwork, that works similarly to a JPEG file. The argument is that the value of NFTs comes from the fact that the buyer becomes the only legitimate owner of the original artwork created by the work’s developer. When an artist creates an NFT, all other copies of the artwork become just that: copies. As a result, the NFT’s market worth is connected to the blockchain that certifies the work’s legitimacy instead of just the work on it’s own. After reading the various informative articles on the effects of NFTs, I would say it is evident that there are both positive and negative effects of their role on the internet. An article that discusses these effects is a Forbes article written by Tyler Gallagher titled, “What Are NFTs And Are They Here To Stay”. A few positive effects he highlights in the article is having documents issued by the government or by the finance industry could be transformed into one-of-a-kind personalized tokens. He talks about how NFTs have a bright future in the rapidly growing virtual reality market. The emergence of decentralized virtual reality worlds may compel the usage of NFTs for the purchase and sale of genuine digital works. They might make it possible for players to buy and keep unique digital objects. Some bad effects of them on the internet would be being aware of con artists and scammers out there looking to profit from people’s ignorance. Gallagher mentions in the article his overall view on NFTs when he states, “There’s massive potential in issuing digital assets on blockchains… The future of NFTs could go in either direction, but the use cases for NFTs go beyond merely art ownership. I think NFTs are here to stay and aren’t going to die out anytime soon.” I agree with Gallagher’s statement because NFTs can be unpredictable but I do believe there is a market for them going forward, especially in the gaming and music industry. Another article that touches on the effects of NFTs is “NFTs Weren’t Supposed to End Like This” by Anil Dash. She mentions NFTs effect on artwork when she states in the article, “Technology should be enabling artists to exercise control over their work, to more easily sell it, to more strongly protect against others appropriating it without permission”. I agree it is easier for artists to tell their art without going through third parties in some instances but still has its flaws. As she mentioned in the article, “how will anyone verify whether the linked artwork is the original?”. If you’re only buying a link to the art work and not the actual how will you know.

Are NFT’s Good or Bad?

NFT’s is a “blockchain-based digital asset, often artwork, that’s not unlike your regular JPEG file. The difference is it’s cryptographically authenticated, meaning the author or creator is verified within an immutable and unchangeable digital record. For some, it’s the future of artwork. For others, it’s a passing fad.” Based on where technology is going, NFT’s are good for the internet. They bring all audiences of all interests online. A potential effect could be that a person can look at an NFT and reduce it to nothing but a gambling tool. According to Forbes,” Much like VR environments, NFTs lend themselves well to online video games. NFTs can allow players to purchase and retain ownership of unique digital items such as skins, armor or weapons. Unlike centralized in-game purchases and microtransactions, NFTs could be created and sold by the players themselves.” With NFT’s lending itself to be user friendly to gamers all across, Virtual reality items are always in high demand.

Week 6

NFTs are Non-fungible tokens. According to the article, What Are NFTs And Are They Here To Stay?, “An NFT is a blockchain-based digital asset, often artwork, that’s not unlike your regular JPEG file. The difference is it’s cryptographically authenticated, meaning the author or creator is verified within an immutable and unchangeable digital record. For some, it’s the future of artwork. For others, it’s a passing fad.” I guess my question is, is this like Crypto-currency like Bitcoin? This article raises the question, are they legit investments? NFTs are made for collectible items and in game addons. I think it’s a waste and shouldn’t even be in existence, especially with Al the NFT scams going on. According to the article, Since they aren’t well-understood by the investing public, there’s bound to be scammers and frauds out there willing to capitalize on ignorance or misunderstanding. Therefore I think it’s bad for the internet because of scammers who want to take advantage and unknowing victims.
